As a reader of histories and biographies, preferably long-sentenced, multiple-claused, intricately-phrased British ones, I was surprised that I could not put this book down and actually read it straight thru in a single sitting. It was an enjoyable read and I found myself relating to many of the author's experiences, all well told, of growing up in '60s America in a family full of problems, or "issues" as too many call them today. The author has a good voice and brings you into his world w/o imprisoning you in it, and the book gave me some good perspectives and thoughts for recognizing and dealing with some of the problems he encountered in his youth. Heartily recommended for all, but especially for kids who think they may be alone in facing the problems foisted upon them by others.Product details

Vic did a good job of tackling or should say figure four scissor ing his story. Insightful, no holds barred to the difficult and true life events. At time funny and at times heart wrenching. A good read that makes this fellow wrestler reflect on my own journey. I recommend it.
I would give this book an A++. The art of writing about oneself, whether it be good times or bad times in your life can be very difficult. This book was very well written and very interesting. There are many grown people, male and female that can really relate to the trials and tribulations while living with their parents. Who knows what the parents lived before we came. Vic Rook is not alone, a lot of happy and sad things happen to good people. This is a must read. Connie B. Snyder

Reading excerpts from the author's website does not prepare you for the emotional impact of the succession of stories. This fast read leaves indelible impressions hilarious evil looking babies, the beauty of a Monarch butterfly and the loss of innocence. This book will resonate with parents and adults who were children of divorce or alcoholics.
This autobiographical reflection by Victor Rook was an enjoyable and honest read. Intimate and relate-able, I felt like I was getting a one-on-one visit to his past, which kept me wanting to read more and more about his experiences and situations. Looking forward to reading more from this author
Highly recommended reading! This is personal musings at it’s best that tells it all. This book will take you from a small town in New York to Virginia, North Carolina and back to New York and then to D.C… One minute you are riding amusement rides and another chapter here comes the spider scares. How about being broke down in a snow storm and walking to a neighbors house that doesn’t want you to stay there, and sends you on the way with another pair of boots to continue your travel. Throw in an abusive alcoholic father, and later a sensual awakening and you don’t want to put the book down. This is just the tip of the ice, as I don’t want to give it all away. To top it off, these musings are real and told from the heart. Excellent!!!
Well written, humorous, account of Rook's upbringing. An easy and enjoyable read. He writes what so many of us think but are not brave enough to say. Rook is the protagonist with an alcoholic father and a mother who tries her best. He takes us from the early years of his life to the present day. Refreshing, fun, upbeat, and a joy to read.
